In Santa Cruz, birds suffer disproportionately to carkill. As the birds fly from tree to tree and cross the roads, a single low-flying maneuver can mean the end as they are smashed by oncoming windshields and carfronts.

Various species of birds are pictured below. These birds were found on Glen Canyon Rd. between Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley unless otherwise noted.

Unknown species

Largely intact, this bird probably was hit by a windshield.

Unknown species

Little remains of this bird to identify it. It may have been smashed at time of death or merely by the continuous stream of cars that unknowingly continue to run it over. It was found in the middle of the lane on Glen Canyon Rd.

This last bird reminds of a time when I found a Stellars Jay gasping for air near the beginning of my climb up Glen Canyon Rd. The bird was bleeding badly and one wing was completey crushed. It was clearly suffering, and I suspected its lung was destroyed. I had to decide whether or not I should leave it to die or help it to do so more quickly. It was not easy to do, but I did finish the job of some anonymous car driver and put the jay out of misery.
