In Santa Cruz, deer are a common sight on the outskirts of town. But deer do occasionally venture closer to civilization, and they live in areas that border many of the counties rural roads.

A few of the unfortunate deer I have spotted on the side of the road are shown below. Once I watched a deer decompose -- that is, every day on my way to work I would notice how much more of the deer had decayed. The deer was on a high speed road where people don't really notice dead animals. On city streets, the various municipalities remove dead animals quite rapidly from the street (see Domestic Animals photos).

Deer

This deer was found on high-speed Mt. Hermon Rd. which runs between Felton and Scotts Valley. This photo was taken about 1/2 mile from a cement plant.

Deer

This deer was found along Glen Canyon Rd.

Deer

I passed this unfortunate deer while riding to work on Graham Hill Rd. Graham Hill Rd. commonly carries traffic 20 to 30mph above its speed limit.
